Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy
While many foods are safe and healthy to consume during pregnancy, there are some that should be avoided due to the risk of foodborne illness or potential harm to the baby. Here’s a list of foods to avoid during pregnancy:
Raw or Undercooked Seafood
Raw or undercooked seafood, such as sushi, sashimi, and oysters, can contain harmful bacteria and parasites that can cause foodborne illness. It’s best to avoid these foods during pregnancy.
Unpasteurized Dairy Products
Unpasteurized dairy products, such as raw milk, soft cheeses (like Brie and Camembert), and certain yogurts, can contain harmful bacteria like Listeria, which can cause serious complications during pregnancy.
Raw or Undercooked Eggs
Raw or undercooked eggs can contain Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Avoid foods made with raw eggs, such as homemade mayonnaise, Caesar dressing, and raw cookie dough.
High-Mercury Fish
Certain types of fish, such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish, have high levels of mercury, which can be harmful to the baby’s developing nervous system. Choose low-mercury fish, such as salmon, cod, and tilapia, instead.
Deli Meats and Hot Dogs
Deli meats and hot dogs can harbor Listeria bacteria, which can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery, or stillbirth. If you choose to eat these foods, make sure they are heated to steaming hot before consumption.
Alcohol
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), which can cause developmental delays and birth defects. It’s best to avoid alcohol entirely during pregnancy.
