Nail Care Myths Debunked
There are many myths surrounding nail care, and it’s important to separate fact from fiction to ensure you’re taking the best possible care of your nails.
Myth 1: Gel and Acrylic Nails Are Bad for Your Natural Nails
While it’s true that improper application or removal of gel and acrylic nails can damage your natural nails, these treatments themselves aren’t inherently harmful. The key is to have them applied and removed by a professional and to give your nails a break between treatments to prevent weakening.
Myth 2: Nails Need to Breathe
Nails are made of keratin, a non-living substance, so they don’t actually need to breathe. However, it’s still a good idea to give your nails a break from polish to prevent staining and allow them to strengthen naturally.
Myth 3: Cutting Cuticles Is Necessary for Nail Health
Cutting your cuticles can actually do more harm than good. Your cuticles serve as a protective barrier against infection, and cutting them can lead to pain and increase the risk of infection. Instead, gently push them back and keep them moisturized.
Myth 4: White Spots on Nails Are Always a Sign of Calcium Deficiency
While white spots on the nails can be caused by a mineral deficiency, they are more commonly the result of minor trauma to the nail. A zinc deficiency is more likely to cause white spots than a calcium deficiency.
